To celebrate Robert Shaffer's remarkable life, his generosity in words and deeds, and his contributions to Indiana University, higher education and student affairs, IU established the Robert H. Shaffer Memorial Fund.
The Shaffer Memorial Fund honors the legacy of Dr. Robert H. "Bob" Shaffer.
Dr. Shaffer was a highly admired and respected member of Indiana University and the higher education and student affairs profession for over five decades. He was instrumental in establishing the Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) program, formerly known as the College Student Personnel (CSP) program, as one of the most prestigious programs in the country. His professional activities included leadership positions in several national organizations in the field of student affairs, from which he received numerous honors and awards.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shaffer pursued a simple but important goal – to encourage the personal and professional development of those with whom he had contact. Bob once said, “I would like to be remembered as an individual who helped others be better than they would have been if they hadn't met me.”
Dr. Shaffer passed away peacefully on April 21, 2017, at the age of 101 leaving behind thousands of former students, staff members, and professional associates who are forever changed by Bob's enthusiasm and commitment to human development.
Bob will be missed, but never forgotten. Indiana University is grateful for his many contributions that continue to touch the lives of undergraduate and graduate students. To honor their mentor and friend, funds are being raised to purchase and install a tree and bench on the Bloomington campus. Funds remaining after the purchase and installation will be used to support scholarships for students studying higher education and student affairs within the School of Education.
