Many physicians go the extra mile for their patients. Few go more than 2,000. For 11 years, Dr. Rafat Abonour and the Miles for Myeloma team have gone the extra mile for families affected by myeloma.

For the last 11 years, the myeloma team at the IU Health Simon Cancer Center has really gone the extra mile for patients. Since 2005, Dr. Rafat Abonour and several members of the IU research and care team have run and cycled between Indianapolis and many cities in the Midwest – an event called “Miles for Myeloma.” The goal is to raise awareness about this rare cancer and generate funding for research and enhanced patient care. Each fall for the past decade, Dr. Abonour and his fellow Miles for Myeloma cyclists - a crew made up of myeloma researchers and medical caregivers, family members of patients and even a few patients themselves - set out on the annual Miles for Myeloma ride.  The three-day cycling event gives myeloma patients and their loved ones the opportunity to conduct personalized fund-raising campaigns to generate awareness about the blood cancer and raise funding for IU research aimed at improving treatments for this rare disease.

Miles for Myeloma has raised more than $3 million for IU multiple myeloma research since 2005. The work funded by these dollars is helping us better understand the disease and conduct clinical trials to explore new treatment options. To help support patients affected by the disease today, Miles for Myeloma is broadening its scope and, starting this year, the effort will support both research at the IU Simon Cancer Center and enhanced patient care at the IU Health Simon Cancer Center via the Methodist Health Foundation. Myeloma is incurable, so research and enhanced care are our hope for the future.

Gifts to Miles for Myeloma support research at the IU School of Medicine via the IU Foundation and enhanced patient care at IU Health via the Methodist Health Foundation. Gifts and donor information are shared with both foundations. If you prefer your information not be shared, please contact Amber Senseny at 317-278-4510 or
